Counselling for admission of candidates under the STARS (Support The Advancement of Rural Students) scheme of VIT University for 2010-11 will begin on Friday. Under the scheme, the district toppers (one boy and one girl each) in the higher secondary examinations from government schools in rural areas in each district in Tamil Nadu (barring Chennai) will be offered a free seat in the B.Tech. course.
According to a release from G. Viswanathan, VIT Chancellor, the districts of Tamil Nadu have been grouped under five zones and counselling would be held at 9 a.m. on all days.
Mr. Viswanathan said that in addition to free education, the selected students would also be provided free accommodation in the VIT hostels. Besides, they would be given special training in English, computers and information technology by experienced faculty.
