Updated on: Monday, June 28, 2010

Adding yet another significant feather to its cap, Andhra University (AU) has signed a 'historical' MoU with the State government's King Geroge Hospital(KGH).

As per the agreement AU is introducing a six-year Pharma D course, first of its kind in the country, from this academic year.

Speaking on the occasion yesterday Prof B Satyanarayana, Vice-Chancellor, AU, said the new course would transform the very profile of the pharma studies thereby adding authentic clinical dimension to the course which has been hitherto in industry-oriented studies.

The course would be offered to the students based on their performance in Engineering Agriculture and Medicine Common Entrance Test (EAMCET). Initially the number of seats would be 30 besides seats for NRI. Students who have completed the earlier degree course in Pharmaceutical Science can join the course in the fourth year, he added.

The course necessitated the student to be attached to a 300-bed hospital right from the second year of his studies to impart him with practical knowledge. Moreover, the student who earned Pharma D degree was eligible to practise in the US. Till now pharma students were required to go through a six-year course in the US to be qualify for employment there, he pointed out.

Rs 25,000 and Rs 1,000 each would be provided to KGH for students in their 6th year internship and training respectively. The fee for management seats would be Rs 1,60,000 whereas for regular seats it would be Rs 51,000, he added.
