CCEA approves 107 Kendriya Vidyalayas

Government today approved a proposal to open 107 Kendriya Vidyalayas which would cater to nearly 1,03,000 students in the country. These schools will be opened during the remaining period of the 11th Plan, taking the total number of Kendriya Vidyalayas to 1088.

The Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) today gave the go-ahead to the proposal which would cost of Rs 806 crore. The financial requirement for construction and operation of these KVs is Rs 526.99 crore in the 11th Plan with a spill over of Rs 279.48 crore towards the capital cost in the 12th Plan, Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters.

The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangthan (KVS), a premier organisation, is running 981 schools with over ten lakh students and nearly 50,000 employees. The Bundelkhand region stretched across Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, whose development is being accorded top priority by the UPA government, will get seven KVs. The region
comprises seven districts -- Jalaun, Lalitpur, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Banda and Chitrakoot in Uttar Pradesh and Tikamgarh in Madhya Pradesh.

Except Lalitpur, none of the districts has a Kendriya Vidyalaya, a HRD Ministry official said. The existing KV in Lalitpur is also in defence sector and is not available to children of non-defence employees. Kendriya Vidyalayas cater to educational needs of children of central government employees including defence and paramilitary personnel who are frequently transferred.
