Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Social Work to start next month

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is all set to establish the Mahatma Gandhi Centre for Social Work in Mokokchung district in collaboration
with the Nagaland Gandhi Ashram, officials said today.

The centre, the first of its kind in Nagaland, has been named as the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education and Development (MGIED) and is scheduled to function at the present Ashram complex at Chuchuyimlang, a hill-top village.

They will soon start a post graduate professional course on Social Work (MSW) at the Ashram, Dr Aotoshi, PRO of Gandhi Ashram said. The centre for social work will start functioning from July 28 and the last date for the receipt of application is
June 30.

The project was being implemented to coincide with the commemoration of more than five decades of service to the rural people of Chuchuyimlang and surrounding villages by the Ashram, he said.

As a follower of the Sarvodaya movement, Nagaland Gandhi Ashram was set up in the village in 1956 by noted social worker and Gandhian Natawar Thakkar at the height of first phase of Naga armed movement in Nagaland.
