Madurai: Shortly Non-Tamil UG students in the State will have some relaxation on compulsory learning basic Tamil language.
Receiving representations from students of other States and countries in this regard, the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) is likely to make some changes for the clause on compulsory Basic Tamil under the Choice Based Credit System.
The TANSCHE Vice-Chairman, A. Ramasamy, had informally communicated to universities that it would be adequate if other country / State students learnt basic Tamil through online mode of the Tamil Virtual University, which is based at Chennai.
When contacted for clarification, Dr. Ramasamy said that a few colleges had brought to the issue to his attention that teaching staffs were having hesitation to teach basic Tamil at the college level. 'We will now ask universities to have a link with the Tamil Virtual University,'he added.
'Non-Tamil students studying in various colleges in the State have appealed that they are finding it difficult to learn Tamil language in college classrooms as they did not study even the Tamil alphabets at school level. Online learning gives them adequate time to pick up the basic Tamil,' Dr. Ramasamy had said during his visit to Madurai Kamaraj University recently.
As only two hours were allotted per week for basic Tamil papers the students find it difficult, but whereas online learning facility gives more time to students.
Hence, Tamil Virtual University would prepare common lessons in basic Tamil subject for the benefit of students of all universities to undergo self-learning.
Soon a meeting of college Principals will be convened by TANSCHE to decide on the basic Tamil issue.
