Qualities you should possess

You must be physically fit and have the right communication skills. You need to have completed your 10+2 and be ready to enter a Bachelor of Physical Education programme. Admission to this course is based on a physical fitness, proficiency in sports and a general awareness test. If you would like to add to your skill-sets then you may wish to pursue a Masters degree afterwards. This will give you an edge over others because you will be well-versed to deal with the numerous opportunities that come your way.

The choices

* You could become a coach and train individuals/teams in a specific sport.
Key functions: provide players with performance feedback, motivate players, help in time and stress management. Devise playing strategies etc.

* Become a teacher/trainer.
Key functions: impart an understanding of basic motor skills and physical fitness to your students, organise sports events etc. As a trainer you would treat and rehabilitate players. For this you would have to work closely with support staff like physiotherapists. Trainers also look after minor injuries.

* Become a fitness instructor.
Key functions: train clients in aerobics, stretching, muscle conditioning exercises and on the various aspects of physical fitness.

* Become a sports manager.
Key functions: planning, controlling, budgeting, leading and evaluating functions related to sport or physical activity. Here you could be involved in sports marketing and management, sports communications, etc.

Opportunities also abound in both government as well as public sector undertakings. The corporate sector offers jobs to trained professionals.
