Speed of school buses curbed

To make the schoolchildren more safer during their daily commute, the government ordered for certain types of school vehicles to use speed governors to curb the maximum speed of these vehicles to 50 kmph.

As per the order dated June 10 these vehicles should fix speed governors within six months. After December 10 vehicles without the devices that regulate the speed of vehicles to a pre-set limit will not be allowed to operate.

A senior transport official told the vehicles that will have to install speed governors include omnibuses owned by educational institutions, contract carriage omnibuses on contract to schools and motor cabs or maxi-cabs used to ferry students to and from their schools.

Regional Transport Office or its authorized officers will issue an official seal to all the vehicles that comply with the rule after confirmation that its speed governor is capable of limiting the vehicleâ€™s speed.

Parents are really happy over the new regulatory order. "It is an excellent move," said a parent of two who lives in Nanganallur.

However, Tamil Nadu Van Owners Association president Kamala Kannan, said the rule is unlikely to do much to improve overall road safety.
