IGNOU starts certificate programme in Water Harvesting

New Delhi: Realising the importance of water harvesting in times of water crisis in the country, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) now offers a certificate programme in Water Harvesting.

The six-month-long certificate programme will impart necessary skills and expertise to understand water harvesting techniques, Regional Director-2 of Delhi Sanjeev Pandey said today.

''The learners will be able to become trainers and organisers themselves at households and community levels for efficient water management in terms of its usage and conservation,'' he said.

Dr Pandey, who is also the programme coordinator, noted that the prediction of normal monsoon this year in the country would further boost the need for water harvesting thereby augmenting the water availability and its effective utilisation.

This programme would be especially useful for those living in water scarce and also drought prone areas, he added.

Phenomenal increase in demand for water has resulted into over exploitation of limited surface as well as ground water resources, and as a consequence constantly depleting ground water table. The situation in urban areas is even more serious.

It is expected that avenues of employment would be available in various Government and Non Governmental Organisations dealing with Water Harvesting Projects, Urban Housing Board, Private Real Estate Builders, Soil Conservation Departments and Ground Water Boards, among others.

A university spokesperson said aspirants, who were 10th pass or have done Bachelor Prepatory Programme (BPP) in IGNOU, were eligible to pursue the programme.
