Chief Minister M Karunanidhi distributed cash awards, totalling Rupees 5.35 lakh and laptops for Rupees 4.13 crore to the state toppers in the plus two and tenth standard examinations.
The state government had been implementing a scheme to encourage the toppers, who take Tamil as a language by giving cash awards and bearing the educational expenditure of the toppers, who take up professional courses.
As per the scheme, the Chief Minsiter distributed cash awards, totalling Rs 5.35 lakh to 26 students, who secured the top three ranks in the plus two and tenth examinations, held in April last.
State top rank holder R Pandian was given Rs 50,000, while the second rank and third rank holders were given Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively, an official release here said.
Similarly, the Chief Minister distributed Rs 25,000 to Jasmine, who became the state top rank holder in the tenth standard xaminations. The second rank and third rank holders were given Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively, it said.
As per the scheme introduced last year, the Chief Minister distributed lap tops to 1100 students, who secured the top 1000 ranks in the tenth standard examinations at a cost of Rs 4.13 crore.
The students and parents profusely thanked the Chief Minister for implementing the scheme, which they said would go a long way in pursuing their higher studies, the release said.
Law Minister Duraimurugan, Backward Classes Minister K K S S R Ramachandran, Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu, Chief Secretary K S Sripathi and senior officials were present on the occasion, the release added.
