Ace the BHU-PMTs!

For the last 40 years medicine has been one career that almost everyone has wanted to join. The reason is simple — those who join the field are revered as saviours or ‘life givers’. “But this noble profession is losing some of its ‘nobility’, with the declining quality of medical professionals — possibly because of brain drain,’’ feels Dr (Professor) Anoop Misra, Director and Head, Department of Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases, Fortis Group of Hospitals, Vasant Kunj and Noida. Some of the best of doctors seem to be taking career courses other than medicine. High returns and early settlements are some reasons for this.

However, if you happen to be one of those who genuinely want to join the medical profession, then be prepared for a long haul and a long training period. But first you must be able to clear the many tough medical entrance exams of which the BHU-PMT is one.

The Institute of Medical Sciences, Benaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU) is the medical school of the University. IMS-BHU is also one of India’s highest-ranked medical colleges and like the rest of BHU, it is a residential, co-educational institute which admits undergraduate (MBBS) students via its highly selective BHU-PMT entrance exams.

BDS, MDS, MD/MS, DM/M. Ch, BAMS, MD (Ay)/MS (Ay) and Ph.D students are selected through respective national entrance tests held by BHU in Varanasi. In the M.Sc (Health Statistics), on the other hand, students are admitted through a common postgraduate entrance test conducted by BHU in different cities.

With a few days to go, your hazy black and white medical dream should begin to appear in technicolour. A few sincere hours of study everyday can easily help you crack the BHU-PMT. In the Biology section pay special attention to animal classification. Phylum protozoa, morphology and the anatomy of a cockroach and earthworm, a detailed study of lac and the silkworm are some other areas that should be thoroughly prepared. In the Physics and Chemistry section take a look at problems based on conservation laws across all the PMTs.

Review key points the day before your test. Brush up all the important topics during the last rounds of revision, giving extra attention to the topics having more weightage in the exam. And last but not least don’t stress yourself out. Believe, be confident and the world will be yours!
