Studies in physician assistant course, hospital management get a fillip

Dr. K.M.Cherian's Frontier Lifeline Hospital has announced the commencement of admissions for the B.S. (Bachelor of Science) in Physician Assistant course, in collaboration with Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani, and the Ph.D Programme in Stem Cell Biology, in collaboration with the prestigious Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.

The courses are offered by an exclusively dedicated academic arm of Frontier Lifeline, the International Centre for Biomedical Sciences and Technology (ICBST) for Research, Training and Applications.

The B.S. course is a four-year programme preparing students for a career in today's rapidly changing medical environment — qualified by academic and clinical training to assist physicians and surgeons in patient care and patient-oriented research. As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care and also assist in surgery.

The eligibility criteria includes 10+2 (CBSE, State Board or equivalent) with Physics / Chemistry / Biology / Mathematics as subject(s). The Ph.D programme in Stem Cell Biology in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University is a move to attract and mould researchers in the field of stem cell technology. The curriculum ensures that the research scholars get adequate exposure in scientific evaluatory skills by means of regular journal clubs and lab meetings to foster interactive scientific discussions. The course emphasizes the importance of translational medicine with the students standing a good chance of visualising their research being applied directly in the clinical scenario after appropriate validations by the government authorities. Candidates who have a master's degree in Science, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology and Haematology, M Sc. Biotechnology, M Tech Biotechnology, M.Phil Life Sciences and MBBS can apply.

MBA in Hospital Management

On the other side of town, the Lifeline Group of Hospitals has signed an MoU with the University of Findlay, Ohio USA, to provide an MBA course in Hospital Management. “With India becoming the global hotspot for Medical Tourism, the need and importance for professionally trained healthcare personnel is fast becoming paramount. As a country that is second to none in the medical arena we now need to focus on quality and system efficiencies in healthcare deliverance, and international hospital management courses such as the ones provided by the University of Findlay become a consequential part of the Indian Healthcare system,” said Dr. J. S. Rajkumar, Chairman, Lifeline Group of Hospitals.

The University of Findlay was established in 1882 in Ohio. They introduced their first MBA programme in 1993 and was one of the early birds to use the Internet as a medium to deliver courses to students online offering four different concentrations, namely; Healthcare Management, Organization Leadership, Hospitality Management and Public Administration. Keeping an increase of approximately 0.8 per thousand doctors and 2 per thousand nurses, India would still need two lakh doctors and five lakh nurses in the immediate future. This apart there is an immediate requirement of over two lakh healthcare management personnel. These statistics prove the need for an efficient and specialised course designed specially keeping the industry needs in mind.

This MBA programme will be a two-year master's degree offered online. Lifeline will provide the infrastructural support for this programme and also provide support to the university's faculty during all its contact programmes. The course will first be open to Lifeline staff and also be extended all over Tamil Nadu. Students who have completed their graduation or postgraduation in either the science, pharmacy or medicine streams are eligible for this course. Students would do their work at their own pace and time of their own choosing. The university would offer one/two courses per term starting from January 2011.
