BJP leader Vijay Goel today demanded that 85 per cent of seats in 18 Delhi Government colleges under the Delhi University be reserved for students who have passed class XII CBSE examination from Delhi. Addressing a press conference here, the BJP leader said he has written a letter to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to highlight the problems of admission in Delhi University, especially for those students residing in Delhi who have passed their Class 12 examination from Delhi CBSE.
''Our demand is that please reserve 85 per cent seats in the 18 Delhi Government colleges for the students who have passed the CBSE exams from Delhi,'' he said. This demand, Mr Goel said, was justifiable because already reservation of seats existed in the case of Delhi Engineering College and Netaji Subhash Chander Institute of Technology.
Questioning the admission process adopted by the Delhi Government, Mr Goel said, ''For the Delhi University one argument that is furnished is that it is a Central University and therefore cannot differentiate between students from Delhi and other states since the University is funded by the Central Government.'' ''But what about those colleges which are funded 100 per cent by the Delhi Government? About 18 colleges of the Delhi University are 100 per cent funded by the Delhi Government.'' This year, a total of 700,983 students appeared in the CBSE, of whom 170,000 students were from Delhi and passed the Delhi CBSE exams. The Delhi University, however, has only 54,000 seats in 61 colleges to accommodate them, the BJP leader quoting figures said.
The BJP leader suggested Ms Dikshit to consider the option of offering evening classes in all these colleges to accommodate more students.
''We also request you to kindly start evening classes in all the 18 colleges, which come under the Delhi Government and also urge you to open new colleges with 85 per cent reservation for Delhi students, '' Mr Goel added.
