Kolkata students blazed a trail of glory in ISC and ICSE
Kolkata: City students blazed a trail of glory on Wednesday in ICSE and ISC, the two national-level school-leaving examinations.
While Sreya Daga topped the plus-II Indian School Certificate (ISC) Examination, Punit Parekh secured the second rank in the Class X ICSE exam. The results of both exams - conducted by the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) - were announced on Wednesday.
Bucking the trend of studying science, both students are interested in pursuing further studies in the commerce stream. While one wants to become a chartered accountant, the other is eyeing an investment banker’s profile.
ISC topper Sreya is a student of Mahadevi Birla Shishu Vihar. Though she got to know from the council website that she had scored 98.75%, she had no clue for quite some time that she was the board topper. Sreya shared the honours with Sumedha Rai of St Anthony’s Junior College, Agra.
A bright student throughout school life, she, however, never dreamt of being an all-India topper, Sreya says shyly. She wants to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a chartered accountant.
Punit, who stood second in ICSE, is a student of Bhawanipore Education Society. His score of 98.6% was just a shade lower than the country record of 98.8%, secured by a girl from Lilavati Poddar School, Mumbai. An extremely studious boy, Punit worked very hard for his brilliant results.
A large number of students from Bengal broke the 90% barrier in many subjects. In ICSE, 395 candidates from the state got over 90% in each of the seven subjects. In ISC, 99 candidates did the same.
In both exams, girls outshone boys as in past years. In ICSE, girls had a pass percentage of 98.27 as against 97.84 among boys. In ISC, the figures were 98.97 for girls visa-vis 97.39 for boys. A total of 296 schools from the state sent candidates for ICSE, while 167 sent candidates for ISC. According to statistics provided by the council, the overall results of both exams are better than last year.
Among the schools that threw up many candidates with 90% and above in aggregate were usual favourites like Don Bosco Park Circus, Modern High School for Girls, La Martiniere, St Xavier’s Collegiate School, St James’, Calcutta Boys’, MP Birla Foundation HS School and Vivekananda Mission School, Joka. The biggest surprise came from Modern English Academy, Barrackpore, which threw up a topper in Arpita Sengupta, who scored 98.4% in ICSE - a shade below the all-India record.
