New Delhi: Arunachal Pradesh is poised to have a 'Central Institute of Himalayan Culture Studies' devoted to creating awareness about ecology and natural
resources, besides offering Buddhist studies.
The institute will be set up as an autonomous body at Dahung in the West Kemang district of the state at a cost of Rs 9 crore with a recurring annual cost of Rs 124.86 lakh per annum.
The proposal, which was cleared by the Union Cabinet today chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will also create awareness about ecological balance and preservation of natural resources.
"It will teach community arts and crafts for self sufficiency and sustainable development and preservation of ethnic identity within the framework of national integration," Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters after the meeting.
The district where the institute is proposed to be established is traditionally a Buddhist predominated area. The institute will not only fill the vacuum that exists
in the field of education, especially Buddhism, but will also provide cultural knowledge to the youth of the region and foster national integration, she said.
