TN Govt reduces eligibility marks for admission to Engg courses

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Government today announced reduction of the minimum eligibility marks, by five per cent for admission to Engineering courses in the state from the academic year 2010-11.

Minister for Higher Education K Ponmudi, addressing a press conference here, said the government's decision to lower the eligibility marks for all categories of students, is followed by representations from managements of self financing colleges, parents and Legislators.

Though the representatives of self financing colleges had requested the government to allow them to admit students, if they had just passed the plus two examinations, like other states, the government decided to reduce only five per cent.

Accordingly, the minimum eligibility marks in plus two examinations, has been reduced to 50 per cent from 55 per cent for students from open category, 45 from 50 for the Backward Classes and 40 from 45 for the Most Backward class students, Mr Ponmudi said.

In case of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students, a mere pass with 35 per centage of marks would be enough to seek admission, he said.
