Madurai: Use of computers for teaching, language laboratories equipped with audio and visual aids are suggested by TN Govt under its Uniform School Education scheme being introduced from this year.
The scheme is being implemented with the aim of ensuring social justice and quality education in schools. The government has formulated the scheme to introduce common syllabus, textbooks and examination system in state board, matriculation, Anglo-Indian and Oriental schools.
Under the scheme, the government has amalgamated existing four boards to create a single common board through an Act, which was upheld by the Madras High Court recently.
To start with, the scheme is being introduced for Class I and VI from this academic year while other classes would be brought under it from 2011-12 onwards.
Besides suggesting setting up of language laboratories for teaching English, Tamil etc., the guidelines also asked the schools to have audio and video cassettes of lessons.
Focus should be given on improving English conversation skills from a very young age, the guidelines, circulated to the schools here, said.
Reading habits of the students should also be improved for which story books, novels, general knowledge books should be stacked in adequate quantity in the school libraries.
The department has also suggested holding periodical mathematics exhibitions in schools which provide scope for creative and lateral thinking. Mathematics class halls should be designed in such a way that the students would be able to practice. The class rooms should have equipment that would make Maths teaching easy for the students.
Students should be taken on tours to learn science and improve their knowledge in the subject. Seminars, exhibitions and competitions should also be held to improve the science knowledge of the students.
Joint Director (Higher Education) Karmegam told a review meeting held here last week that Practical examinations would be introduced in all science subjects from Class nine.
This was being introduced in order to prepare the students for the uniform education scheme.
He said every government school would be given Rs.25,000 under the Rashtriaya Madyamik Shiksha Abhiyan scheme for purchasing laboratory equipment for science practicals.
