New Delhi: In a bid to develop strategic planning and analysis to keep up with the country's longterm geopolitical goals, the government is now planning to establish the country's first Indian National Defence University (INDU).
The proposal to set up INDU as a completely autonomous institution to be formed by an Act of Parliament will be taken up by the Union Cabinet today.
A report submitted in 2001 by the Group of Ministers on "Reforming the National Security System" had also recommended the setting up of a defence university so that an alliance between the academic as well as the executive world cold be established.
The university research on defence and strategic issues is currently neither structured effectively and nor does it have any policy orientation.
On the other hand, nations such as US and China have their own defence universities that help in a dynamic exchange of ideas between the defence academic circle and the government.
A senior official said that the government was hoping to instill governance with a strategic culture that is suitable and will help in promoting synchronization and communication among the three armed forces, the Army, Navy and Indian Air Force.
He added that INDU's responsibilities would include undertaking longterm defence and strategic research, creation of a harmony between academicians and government functionaries and education of national security leaders on each and every aspect of national security.
