Tirunelveli: Considering the demand for young and qualified technocrats in organizations involving space research and allied fields, Anna University (AU) in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu has decided to introduce a four year B.E. programme in Geo Informatics, which is to begin from this academic year.
The demand for this course is being speculated to be quite high and AU is the first in the city of Chennai to offer this course apart from its earlier two-year M.Tech and PhD programmes in the field.
Vice Chancellor of AU, S. Kaliappan has said that the decision to start the course was taken after senior scientists working at high end research facilities such as Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Bangalore, and National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) Hyderabad, observed the dedication and sincerity of M.Tech Geo Informatics students while working at projects at these facilities.
The Vice Chancellor has reportedly already begun constructing a state of the art research station at the Government College of Engineering in Tirunelveli funded by ISRO.
The chairman of ISRO K. Radhakrishnan, a close contact of the VC, has been awarded PhD by the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-K), in 2000 for his thesis on 'Some strategies for management of Indian earth observation system' and is keen on lending his expertise into the course.
Dr. Kaliappan said, "We have designed a world class curriculum for the course that will be taught at Palayamkottai, Nagercoil and Tuticorin, which will admit 120 students each."
He also added that the existing sophisticated infrastructure of the university would be an added advantage and that the students applying for the course will get to experiment using high tech gadgets that are used all over the world in large organizations dedicated to space research.
