Kochi: The National Council for Teacher Education, the regulatory body teacher education courses announced that it recognises the teacher education courses by open and distance education mode.
As per section 17 (4) of NCTE Act, any qualification in teacher education obtained through institutions not recognized by NCTE shall not be treated as valid qualification for the purpose of employment under the Central Government, State Government, university, any school, college or other education body aided by the Central Government or any State Government.
As per the Government of India's Gazette Notification No. 44 dated 01-03-1995 issued by Ministry of Human Resource Development (Department of Education), the qualifications acquired by individuals through distance education mode are recognized for the purpose of employment in posts and services under the Central Government, provided these have been approved by Distance Education Council (DEC)- Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi and wherever necessary by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi.
In the context of the above it is clarified that as per mandate, the NCTE recognizes pre-service teacher training courses in face-to-face mode only while teacher training courses offered in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode are recognized only for those already serving/working as teachers, teacher educators, educational administrators, educational researchers, curriculum and material developers and others engaged in the educational system.
Therefore, those covered under the above categories pursuing or wanting to pursue any teacher education programme through open and distance learning mode offered by an institution /university, are hereby advised to check its recognition status by NCTE on the website at www.ncte-india.org.
