Puducherry: The Puducherry government had a few years ago sought instructions from the Centre to private medical colleges here to earmark 50 per cent quota of total seats under government quota in the MBBS course and adherence to fee structure levied by the government sponsored Fee Committee, Chief Minister V Vaithlingam said today.
Replying to points by opposition AIADMK member A Anbalagan during question hour, he said the government had drawn the Centre's attention some years ago to the need for all such professional colleges here to be under the territorial government's supervisory control.
These included colleges that had taken midway a status of `deemed to be universities`. He said the Centre has been paying close attention to infrastructure and other amenities in such colleges, including those converted to deemed to be universities .
Both Chief Minister and Health Minister E Valsaraj pointed out that there could be no detailed discussion on the subject as the matter was now sub judice, with the Centre zeroing in on a good number of colleges across the country. Vaithilingam said the government would always keep students interests in mind.
On initiatives to start the first government sponsored medical college, Valsaraj said construction of buildings had almost been completed. A Medical Council of India team would inspect it in April. The college would go on stream in 2010-11 academic year and 150 students would be admitted to the first year MBBS course in this government college, he said.
