New Delhi: A new committee, set up by HRD Ministry on suggesting reforms in IIT-Joint Entrance Exam, is likely to recommend a formula to ensure that non-serious students are not allowed to appear in the test for admission into IITs.
The four-member committee, headed by IIT-Kharagpur Director Prof Damodar Acharya, is working out the formula under which competition could be minimised to a smaller group of students who are really serious and have the potential, according a source.
At present, about four lakh students are applying for the test for admission into 15 IITs with about 10,000 seats. This means about 40 students are competing for one seat in these prestigious institution.
"About 39 candidates get disqualified for a seat. The idea is to reduce the competition to 10 students for one seat. Those who are really serious should apply," the source said.
The panel could recommend the formula to ensure that the Class-XII marks of students get weightage during preparation of cut-off for admission into the IITs. A Terms Of Reference, issued by the HRD Ministry for the Acharya committee, has said that the panel should look at modifying the formal of JEE to make it a comprehensive test which can replace All India Engineering Entrance Exam and state level entrance tests for admission into engineering institutions. The JEE could be called an Aptitude Test.
The committee will submit its report in two months time. The final decision on JEE formal will be decided in the next meeting of IIT Council.
