New Delhi: Tullmulla-Kurhama in Kashmir and Samba in Jammu have been finalised as the sites for two central universities in Jammu and Kashmir. The site selection came after Parliament amended an Act in its last Winter Session paving the way for creation of two central universities in the state.
The HRD ministry has finalised the two sites for the proposed institutions, a top ministry source told PTI, adding that the sites selected by the government committee are near to the airports and have adequate land available.
These locations are also relatively urban areas and fit for hosting universities, he said. A site selection committee from HRD Ministry had visited some sites in the state in January. The team had visited three sites -- Tullmulla, Saloora and Rakhe Kujar in Kashmir region for Central University of Kashmir while it visited Samba, Chakrohi and Nandni in Jammu region for possible locations for Central University of Jammu.
Parliament in its winter session has passed the Central University (Amendment) Act, 2009, paving the way for establishment of two central universities one in Kashmir and one in Jammu. Earlier, the Central University Act, which provides for 15 central universities across the country, had provision for just one varsity in the state.
Among other courses, the Central University in Kashmir will have Master Degree in Management, English and IT. It will also have Ph.D programmes in these subjects.
