Proposal to start 'UG board'

Updated on: Friday, April 24, 2009

Mumbai: For the sake of better management the Maharastra Govt considers to split Mumbai, Pune universities.

According to the recommendations of National Knowledge Commission (NKC), the State Government considers to bifurcate or trifurcate these universities to promote academic excellence in teaching and research, a senior official said.

The Commission, set by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had proposed the formation of 'Undergraduation Board' to detach undergraduate colleges from the Universities so that the Universities can focus more on teaching and Research programmes, the official said.

The center is yet to give a nod to the NKC's proposal. Day-to-day administrative exercise was increasingly becoming difficult, as the Mumbai University has hundreds of colleges under its jurisdiction from at least five districts and Pune University in three districts.

It was, therefore, felt that the proposals of NKC could come handy to encourage high quality teaching and research in universities like many of the developed nations.
