The Department of Women's Studies, Bharathiar University, offers M.A., M. Phil., and Ph.D., programmes in the regular stream. A diploma in Industrial Relations and Labour Welfare is being offered with the MA programme.
According to the Director, M. Jeyarathnam, the department is involved in scholarly enquiry into social reality from a woman's perspective and tries to find explanations and remedies for the unequal position of women in society.
Field work, internship and project work are the practical components of the course.
The outreach activities are designed to expose social reality to the students. The workshops, seminars, conferences and programmes on themes like gender sensitisation, child rights, gender violence, environmental pollution, women and law, women and media, entrepreneurship and productive health have reached more than 10,000 women and students so far.
The Department has adopted two villages in Vadavalli Panchayat, namely Sikarayapuram and Maruthapuram. Computer literacy programmes for SHG women have been going on since 2008.
It has also received various grants, has framed syllabus for a course on Women Rights, and has also brought out a book on “Women and Legal Rights”.
A degree holder in arts or science is eligible to apply for the MA programme. Both men and women can apply. Applications can be downloaded from the university's website www.b-u.ac.in.
The university offers free education to one deserving student. SC / ST / MBC students are eligible for education loan and Government scholarship.
Employment opportunities are available in non-Governmental organisations, Mahalir Thittam, Government welfare projects, as medical counsellors, social workers, etc.
