Kolkata: Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chicago held an Asian alumni meet on February 27, a graduation convocation and an International Advisory Board meeting in Mumbai to discuss the institute’s future plans and activities for India.
Over 40 students were awarded master’s degrees. John Anderson, president and eminent graduates Sam Pitroda, adviser to the prime minister of India on public information infrastructure & innovations and Jamshyd Godrej, chairman and managing director of Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co, and G V Prasad, chief executive officer of Dr Reddy’s, were among the speakers at the ceremony.
Illinois Institute of Technology is among the leading destinations for Indian students seeking post-graduate qualifications in the USA and has long been a resource in education, research, innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership. About 1,000 of its 7700 students are from India.
Upon Pitroda’s advice, IIT began offering professional master’s programs via streamed video in India in 1997. Since then, more than 300 engineers have earned US master’s degrees without leaving their home turf.
Programmes include Computer Science; Electrical, Network, Manufacturing, Software and Telecommunications Engineering; Microelectronics and VLSI; and Information Technology Management through IIT’s centres in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai.
IIT held several events in Mumbai from February 25-27. University trustees, graduates from seven countries, and officials converged.
