Theatre as a solution

Art can open many doors, but can it be applied to the field of management, or management education? Students of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, certainly believes so. The Institute has added a new elective course titled ‘Exploring organisational process through the medium of theatre' in its Post-Graduate Programme (PGP) as on February 21. The programme was flagged off with the staging of three short plays produced and performed by the students.

Objective

The objective behind introduction of the special course is to facilitate better understanding of managerial concepts such as planning, implementing and showcasing products, with the intervention of theatrical concepts.

“It's basically an experiential course, and the focus is on strengthening theoretical concepts like team building, time-management, leadership and presentation.

Theatre is basically a process, and students basically create a product from scratch and receive almost instant feedback from their customers — the audience,” said Vijay Nair, course instructor.

Analysis

The 10-week-long course encompasses plays including those by Mahesh Dattani and Girish Karnad in its module, which will be analysed and discussed by the students.

The final grade points will be based on the quality of analysis and the play staged by them.

Interest in theatre

The course which was previously on offer for only the students of Post-Graduate Software Enterprises Management (PGSEM) was extended to the students of PGP owing to revival of interest in theatre as a subject.
