The importance of a global perspective in higher education can be felt more than ever before and more so in legal and management education. It is with the aim of offering a global learning experience that the O. P. Jindal Global University (JGU) is planning its expansion, according to its vice-chancellor Professor C. Raj Kumar.
The university was established by the Haryana Private Universities (Second Amendment) Act, 2009 at Sonipat, Haryana, as an initiative of Naveen Jindal, chancellor.
The University Grants Commission has notified JGU as a private university established by the State legislature of Haryana.
JGU and its first school Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) are recognised by the Bar Council of India. It offers a five-year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) programme; a three-year LL.B. (Hons.) programme and an LL.M. programme.
The school collaborates with Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, New York University School of Law, King's College, London, University College, Oxford, United Nations University and several other reputed law schools and universities.
“The university aims at fostering global programmes, offering a global curriculum, providing opportunities for global research and collaborations, and also global interaction through faculty from some of the best schools in the world,” says Prof. Raj Kumar.
“We have established 10 research centres in cutting-edge areas of law and policy with a view to creating knowledge and promoting excellence in research. JGLS has signed MoUs with some major Indian law firms,” he adds. The university follows a teacher-pupil ratio of 1:15.
Business school
This academic year, JGU has also established the Jindal Global Business School (JGBS). “The vision of JGBS is to impart global business education to equip students, managers and professionals with necessary knowledge, acumen and skills to effectively tackle challenges faced by business and industry.”
It would also offer multi-disciplinary global business education to foster academic excellence, industry partnerships and global collaborations, besides conducting research, offering global programmes and host international conferences and workshops on issues that affect the corporate world.
JGBS will commence its first academic session in August 2010 with a two-year MBA programme. Scholarships are made available to deserving students.
