Never write off any student

My nephew is studying in SSLC. He is doing very well in his studies. He wanted to study the CBSE pattern from the Eighth Standard, but could not due to various reasons. After completion of SSLC he wants to make an attempt to join the Central board and pursue IIT. Please guide him.

There are changes and swift changes that students, teachers and parents encounter over the years. Formulating an opinion about a programme, a course, area of study always helps, but beyond a point, it is the interest, the ability to endure that will help in one's progression.

If the learner is really good in academics, the type of education does not matter. It is how one sustains and moves forward that matters. But while making changes midway, success is not guaranteed. Hence, it is suggested that one must excel and achieve the ultimate goal that one has planned for oneself.

I have done M.A. in Geography. What is scope of geography after this other than Ph.D. and M.Phil? What course can I do further so that I can get a job?

A M.Phil and Ph.D. would surely help one to achieve distinctions in the subject. Further dabbling with subjects such as cartography, urban ecology and planning, regional economics and science, Geographic Information System (GIS), remote sensing, geographic quantitative and qualitative methods, will help one to reach the higher echelons of the area of study. You need to specialise in the area of study by choice rather than by chance.

I am in BCA sixth semester. I have developed a slight fear about pursuing MCA. Is there any other course that I can pursue in Computer Applications and get the right job? I do not have a project guide.

You will need to sit with your college counsellor or professor in the Department of Computer Applications and understand the bridge between BCA and MCA. If you have decided to make a mark in Computer Applications and to get to the world of Information Technology then there should no looking back. You should gather courage and strength from your peers and mentors and go all out to succeed. Your college and institute will surely provide the necessary support to execute the project which is important in the career of a student. You should make all efforts to get to a live project with a corporate which will ensure your entry into the corporate world.

My daughter is in 10th Standard. She has been considered as poor in her studies. Her IQ has been rated as 69 per cent by an agency. We are making our best of efforts to ensure that she passes her examination. Please advice what course she should take for the future.

By consulting a professional counsellor, you will make better efforts to help and support your daughter. Never write off any learner/student. Putting a lot of pressure on the child may lead to a crisis. One should not allow this to happen.

If you can understand the need and more so the interest of your daughter, you will be able to plan well. By forcing her to learn to get to an area of study, we are not doing any justice to her. Hence, in such cases one needs to tread cautiously.

If she is not in a position to cope with the present load, one should take the support of a counsellor and ensure that constant feedback is provided for her upbringing.

As parents we need to be patient and ensure that the learning takes place in a gradual fashion. Time is the greatest equaliser for all of us; and we need to go along with time.

I completed B.E. in Electronics and Communications in 2009. At this juncture I am not in a position to take up MBA or PG in Engineering. Kindly advice so that I have a good career.

There is no need to get perturbed about higher studies as the opportunities available for an associate in the corporate world are many today. You should at this juncture attempt for a placement to suit your qualifications and competencies.

Once in the corporate world you should join programmes that will offer you an environment to learn and continue with your work.

BITS, Pilani; Symbiosis; and IIMs offer a host of executive programmes which have attracted the attention of many a corporate learner.

I am in final year B.Com. I want to pursue a degree in Hotel Management by correspondence or evening college. How do I go about it?

. Considering that you will be completing B.Com, it is advisable that you pursue short-term programmes in hotel management that will add value to your career. A regular hotel management degree programme as per AICTE norms is conducted for a duration of eight semesters (four years).

Short-term courses in a focused area such as Food and Beverage Production/Service, House Keeping, front office will help you to channelise your career.
