NSS volunteers create awareness on ill-effects of plastics

The National Association of Software and Service Corporation (NASSCOM) and Data Security Council of India jointly organised “Cyber Safe Tamil Nadu 2009” at the PSG College of Arts and Science recently. The aim of the programme was to spread the message of cyber safety and IT security across all user community. Representatives from the organizations threw light on the cyber security challenges, cyber safety and ethical hacking, identity theft and corporate data security in the various sessions.

Volunteers of the NSS units of PSG College of Technology organised a Plastic Eradication Drive at Idigarai, one of the adopted villages of the college. The volunteers went about collecting plastic waste. Some others went about distributing the paper bags that some of the volunteers had prepared. The seven days were put to good use by the volunteers in spreading the message about clean and green environment.

The reunion of the first batch of alumni of Sree Narayana Guru Polytechnic College was held at the college recently. This was organised as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the college. The members planted saplings in the college campus. Faculty and other staff who had retired from service were also honoured.

The Post-Graduate Department of Management Studies of PA College of Engineering and Technology, Pollachi, organised a workshop on “Personality and Soft Skill Training”. G. Senthil Kumar and other representatives from Helix Institute of Training and Development conducted the workshop on employability skills such as communication, team building, presentation, listening, problem solving and decision making.

The College of Pharmacy of Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Paramedical Sciences conducted the 48th National Pharmacy Week celebrations. T.B. Nair, Executive Secretary, Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Mumbai, was the chief guest. The semi-final round of the IPA's national elocution competition was held on the occasion. The scholarship prizes of the Tamil Nadu Pharmaceutical Sciences Welfare Trust for post-graduate dissertation work were distributed. Prizes were also distributed to students who had excelled in the various competitions held to mark the celebrations.

The second graduation of Sri Kalaivani College of Education was held recently. Chancellor of Karpagam University R. Vasanthakumar delivered the graduation day address and distributed the degree certificates. He spoke on the wide disparity that existed between the opportunities available to the rich, educated and urban-centred people and the poor, rural and illiterate people. There was not only an unacceptably large proportion of illiterate population, but also a major unfulfilled demand for quality public education at every level of learning and research, he said.

An orientation in Engineering Education was conducted at the KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology. S.N. Sivanandham, Head, Computer Science and Engineering, PSG College of Technology, was the chief guest. He urged the students to study specific principles with focus and to understand the total meaning of the same by splitting a sentence into many. Recalling the contributions of Ramanujam, he exhorted the students to emulate him.

Students of the Commerce Department of Sri Krishna Arts and Science College conducted a vintage and village camp at Komandamparai. The camp was to create awareness on water conservation and water management. Students with placards informed people about the judicious use of water. They also formed a human chain and distributed pamphlets containing various steps to be taken in water conservation.

An inter-school yogasana competition was conduced at SNMV College of Arts and Science. More than 100 students from 18 schools participated. M.M. Bhuradia, Secretary of the college, addressed the students and gave away the prizes. He spoke on the greatness of yoga and how it made one fit and healthy.

The Commerce Department of Angappa College of Arts and Science conducted a seminar on Effective Marketing Strategies in Competitive Business. Chandrasekar, Manager, Sree Annapoorna Food Products, addressed the students and spoke on the importance of branding and effective marketing strategies. He stressed the importance of creativity, smartness sales and business, targeting the market customer, branding and packing, pricing, communication, product placement and work challenge.

A workshop on life skills was held at the Hindusthan College of Education. Resource persons Pradeep Yuvaraj and Karthikeyan stressed the importance of coping stress, transactional analysis, self motivation and self awareness. They explained to the students how to develop these skills so as to pass it on to the students they would be teaching in future.

The Jansons Institute of Technology conducted the sixth series of engineering and technology enrichment programme for first year engineering students. D. Srinivasan, Department of Psychological Medicine, Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, spoke on stress management, super power memory of human beings, power of interest and desire, etc. He stressed the importance of mental health, how to gain from every situation and always look for something good. He also added that students should take apt decisions because failing to plan itself was planning to fail.

Students from G.V.G. Visalakshi College for Women went on a visit to MOP Vaishnav College for Women. They learnt various skills like artificial jewellery making, cosmetology, baking, yoga, aerobics, entrepreneurial skills, etc.

The first year MSW students of RVS College of Arts and Science organised a general medical camp at Kallapalayam. Students and staff from the Department of Bio-Chemistry and a medical doctor organised the camp and conducted the general check-ups. They also conducted a plastic awareness rally and spread the message on the ill-effects of using plastics.

Sankara Institute of Management organised a seminar personality development. K.P. Krishnamurthy, Head, Corporate, Match Point, Chennai, was the chief guest. He stressed the need for understanding the industry scenario. He spoke on the permanent industry and bubble industry concept. He urged students to avail of the opportunities available to them rather than searching for opportunities suitable to them.

The Business School of Dr. NGP Institute of Technology organised a faculty development programme on Emerging Paradigms in Indian Business Education. Resource persons M. Settu, Chief Executive Officer, Syndicate Exports Private Limited, and K. Vivekanandan, Professor, Bharathiar School of Management and Entrepreneurial Development, spoke on spiritual intelligence and IT as a tool for management excellence.

Green Valley Educational and Charitable Trust conducted a conference “E-Learn India – 2009”. A. Raja, Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology, delivered the valediction address. He said that e-learning had become the answer for undergraduate students who wished to complete their courses that they had left incomplete.

This modern learning system addressed problems related to age, work schedules and travelling distances for those who wanted to go back to school and study.

The Department of Social Work of Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science organised a rural camp at Kurunallipalayam for a week. Students were involved in various activities for the benefit of the village and the villagers.
