Andhra University, the first general university to receive prestigeous ISO 9001:2000 certification in December 2006 is gettting ready for a visit by a team from from TUV South Asia Limited for extension of the certificate.
Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana recently told the HoDs and faculty to get ready for the visit as the TUV team would visit the academic departments and examine the academic activities.
Research admissions
The schedule for admission into the research programmes of AU has almost been finalised. Those applying for full-time programme has to qualify through a written test and interview. The written test consists of two papers, one on the subject and the other on general studies, communication, english, etc. Both papers will be of objective type. Each paper carries 25 marks and the marks in PG examination will have a weightage of 25 marks, the research proposal carries 15 marks and the interview 10 marks, for a total of 100 marks.
The admission notificatin is expected to be issued on Feb. 24 with the entrance test scheduled for March 31with admissions to take place during May.
There is also a proposal to take more part-time research candidates and limit the number of full-time research scholars as the university may not be able to provide accomodation to all those admitted. As of now the mess of the research scholars hostel is not working for the last many days as the hostellers have not paid the pending bills.
Teachers have to wait
Teachers of AU have to wait for some more time for implementation of new UGC payscales. This is in spite of the State Govenment receiving the required funds from the Centre. The teachers expected to receive the new scales and some accompanying benefits during this financial year itself but they may not get the same that early. This is because the UGC has to issue an order to implement the new payscales. The State Govenment has to wait till then to give the hiked salary to the teachers.
Along with this this news, another information received by the teachers is that the UGC als also put a condition of a teacher has to his or her credit articles published in peer review journals, a qualification many lack.
Orientation programme for teachers
The UGC-Academic Staff Collge of Andhra Univeristy organised a month-long orientation programme for university teachers on law. Senior Civil Judge and Secretary of Dirstrict Legal Services Authority D. Dharma Rao was chief guest of the valedictory function. Director of ASC G. Ramachandrudu informed that 45 teachers from universities in Karnataka and Assom, Sri Venkateswara, Acharya Nagarjuna and Andhra universities attended the orientatio programme.
Lecture on genetics
A professor of School of Life Sciences of JNU Jaishree Paul delivered a lecture on “genetic susceptibility of inflammatory bowel disease” organied by the Department of Genetics of AU. Prof. Jaishree found significant association between molecular studies and the disease and hoped the same might be used as benchmarks to screen individuals with gastro intestinal problems.
Prof. Satyanarayana felicitated Prof. Jaishree. HoD g. Sudhakar, HoD of biotechnology T. Ramana, HoD of microbiology G. Subbarangaiah, faculty and teachers of these departments participated.
Doctors' Enclave opened
Andhra University's Health Centre has been added with more facilities recently. Tribal Welfare Minister P. Balaraju inaugurated Doctors' Enclave of the Centre last week. The enclave has five doctor's chambers and will provide medical care of high quality to the university community, Senior Medical Officer G. Balakrishna informed. Prof. Satyanarayanan, Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy, Principals of campus colleges and others were present.
Computer lab opened
Prof. Satyanarayana inaugurated a computer lab at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Andhra University College of Law. Principal A. Rajendra Prasad, Prof. Prasada Reddy and others were present.
Consumer awareness camp
Consumer is the king and traders are indebted to the consumers, said president of Visakha Consumers Education and Service Society Chapa Kumar at a consumers awareness programme organised at the Chaitanya Degree and PG College for Women.
He told the students of the many aspects to be observed while making a purchase, like the information written on the wrapper, the weighing stones, etc. and the rights the consumer enjoys. Principal M.V. Ramana Rao, Vice-Principal M.L. Narasimham, NSS Programme Officers P.V. Ram and K. Maheswara Rao, Coordinator K. Madhusudhana Rao, secretary of consumer society M. Satyanarayana spoke.
Annual day
Students and teachres of SVVP VMC Mahila Vidyapeeth Degree and PG College celerbated annual day with great enthusiasm. Dean of College Development Council of AU Suryanarayana Raju was the chief guest. Secretary of the college S.V.H. Rajendra, Principal Nalini Kumari, HoD social work N. Indira Rani, student union president K. Bhanu Rekha spoke before the studnets presented a cultural programme.
K.L. Sravani, a B.Sc. (biotech) student recieved the Sri Sunkari Alwardas memorial gold medal for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Talk on Telangana agitation
The college, as a seperate programme, organised a talk on a curren topic-the demand for bifurcation of the State and also for a unified State. Head of the Department of Politics and Public Administraion of AU K. Ravi spoke on Visalandhra-Telangana agitation and problems if the State is bifurcated. Prof. Ravi explained in detail the Telangana armed struggle and analysed the history since the days of Nizam's rule and the benefits and disadvantages if the State remained unified or divided.
Doctorates awareded
Head of the Department of Sanskrit at K.G.R.L. Degree College, Bhimavaram M.V.B. Gangadhara Rao received Ph.D. in Sanskrit from Andhra University for his thesis “Ashtadasavarnanas in Kalidasa's Raghuvamsa and Kumarasambhava-a study”. Prof. M.V. Ramana of AU was his research guide.
Ph.D. was awarded to Golla Prakash Babu in history and archaeology for his thesis, “the Godavari Delta Mission in Andhra Pradesh 1836-1986: a historical perspective”. Prof. P. Sivunnaidu was his guide.
