Counselling for Students Under depression

Chennai: To recover students under depression, the State Higher Education Department is considering introducing counselling in all colleges in the State.

Last year, State Education Minister K Ponmudy announced that they were considering the proposal submitted by the Psychologists Association to provide counselling facility for college students.

While looking back into past incidents, a PG student of College of Engineering, Anna University, too killed himself when he did not perform well in his exams. The Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof P Mannar Jawahar announced a mentoring system to provide counselling for students.

But students say that they are not aware of the programme. 'Job opportunities have been less this year. The VC said that students should look at creating job opportunities and not look for jobs told us in a series talks by entrepreneurs and. They just do not understand the pressure we are in.,' said a final year student of CEG, Anna University.

Faculty members pointed out that the monitoring system is being framed to cater to the needs of the first year students only.

A remedy framed in the case of IIT and a group of doctors who are willing to collaborate with the higher education department. When contacted Nalini Ravindran, director, Collegiate Education said,'We are considering the proposal and will look at the various options of implementing the proposal worked out in the next academic year.'
