The 11 {+t} {+h} zonal level nursing quiz competition “Zenith ‘09” was held at the PSG College of Nursing. Nearly 16 teams from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka took part in the competition. The quiz focused on two specialties, namely fundamentals of nursing and medical surgical nursing. A round on eco system was also held. The rolling trophy was won by St. John's College of Nursing, while the first runner up went to KMCH College of Nursing and the second runner up went to College of Nursing, Madras Medical College.
The IEEE student branch of Sri Eshwar College of Engineering was inaugurated recently. Ramalatha Marimuthu, IEEE WIE Asia-Pacific Co-ordinator and Head of Department, Karpaga Vinayaga College of Engineering and Technology, Chennai, was the chief guest. Inaugurating the student branch, she detailed the benefits if being an IEEE member and also urged the students to join the Women-In-Engineering Affinity Group.
The PPG Institute of Technology and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board jointly organised a seminar on “Conservation of Energy and Global Warming”. A. Thangavelu, Chief Engineer, TNEB, Coimbatore Region, stressed the importance of saving energy and pointed out the steps that one should take to conserve energy. N. Ananthakrishnan, Superintending Engineer, TNEB, elaborated on the reasons and effects of global warming.
The computer association “Calipso ‘09” of the Department of MCA of Nehru Institute of Engineering and Technology was inaugurated recently. C. Meena, Head, Computer Centre, Avinashilingam University for Women, inaugurated the association and spoke on “Techniques used in Digital Image Processing”.
Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science conducted an orientation programme for its faculty members on “Development and You”. The programme was organised by Siruthuli. Participants were briefed on topics such as afforestation, water harvesting, demerits of using plastic bags and effective use of rain water. The need to protect and preserve Nature and pass it on to the next generation was highlighted. Also issues like keeping surroundings clean and disposing of garbage in the right manner were discussed.
The Dr. Ambedkar Study Centre and Gandian Study Centre of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women jointly organised the celebrations of the commemoration of the 50 {+t} {+h} year of Panchayati Raj in India. G. Palanithurai, Professor, Gandhigram Rural University, was the chief guest. He explained to the students how powerful the gram sabhas were and how important it was for the presidents and counsellors of the village panchayats to see that all benefits of the centre percolated to the villages. A book titled “Samata”, a biography of B.R. Ambedkar, was released by the chief guest to mark the occasion.
A multi-lingual elocution competition was held at the Kongunadu Arts and Science College on behalf of the Sindhanai Kavignar Kavidasan Trust. Prizes for meritorious students were given away at a function got up for the same on the birthday of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Chief guest Mr. Kavidasan handed over the prizes and spoke about the greatness of the day.
The Sri Ramakrishna Institute Management Association of the Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Technology organised a management fest “Brilliance ‘09”. MBA students from various management institutions took part. Chandra Kumar Mangalam, Professor, Anna University, Coimbatore, inaugurated the fest and addressed the students. Various events like business quiz, business plan, etc., formed part of the fest. Wing Commander S. Arjunan, Air Force Administrative College, handed over prizes to the winners.The Department of Mathematics of Dr. NGP Arts and Science College organised a Mathfest '09. A news letter Sigma Express was released on the occasion.
The Department of English of Park College of Engineering and Tekhnology organised the event “The Budding Genius” under the aegis of Daffodils, the English Literary and Debating Association. T. Sasi Sekaran, Head, Department of English, Chikkaya Naicker College, Erode, was the chief guest of the event. He traced the history of English language and stressed the importance of developing communicative skills.
Larsen & Toubro conducted a campus interview at Karpagam College of Engineering. Nearly 100 were shortlisted. More than 500 students from various institutions participated in the interview. The selection process involved an aptitude test followed by a technical test and power point presentation.
The NCC Girls Wing of SNMV College of Arts and Science organised a tree plantation campaign. Nearly 100 neem saplings were planted. They were donated by Siruthuli.
The convocation of PSG College of Pharmacy was held recently. Suresh Kamath, General Manager, Unichem Laboratories, Goa, was the chief guest.
He touched upon the growing opportunities for pharmacy professionals as the pharma industry was expanding rapidly in India. He also highlighted the increasing importance of clinical pharmacy in health care system and expressed hope that the introduction of the Pharma D course in India would make clinical pharmacy a well recognized profession in developed countries.
A faculty development programme was organised at the Sree Narayana Guru College. Sessions on behaviour and stress management, internal quality assurance, phonetics for effective communication and strategies for teaching methodologies were conducted for the participants.
The Memorial Day of T.S. Avinashilingam was observed by the students and staff of Avinashilingam University for Women. R. Kowsalya Devi, Managing Trustee, Gandhigram Rural University, Dindigul, was the chief guest.
She urged the students to lead a life of service. Chancellor T.K. Shanmuganandam extolled the achievements of Avinashilingam and spoke on his mission of “Education for Sustainable Development”.
The NCC wings of PSG College of Technology celebrated the NCC Day. Various competitions were organised to mark the celebrations. Essay writing and painting competitions on the topics of India as an emerging power, role of NCC in nation building, unity in diversity and global warming were held. A tree plantation programme and cultural events also formed part of the celebration.
Kathir College of Engineering inked a memorandum of understanding with Flow Link System Private Limited, a casting and valves' manufacturer.
The MoU would entail the students of the college to undertake inplant training at the company. On successful completion of training, the company would absorb the students..
Nehru Institute of Information Technology and Management organised an inter-collegiate management fest Confluence '09. Students from 16 colleges and management schools participated in the various events. Students from Bharathiar School of Management and Entrepreneur Development won prizes in the Gift of the Gab, Hard Selling and Cyborgs events.
A seminar on “Dot Net Progamming” was held at the Easa College of Engineering and Technology. Priya, Technical Leader, Mazenet Solutions Private Limited, was the chief guest.
The faculty of management at Erode Builder Educational Trust's Group of Institutions, Kangayam, organised a special lecture on 'Paradign shift in HR practices' on its premises recently. Oommen Abraham, vice-president (corporate HR), Cavinkare Private Limited, Chennai, interacted with students pursuing MBA programmes.
He explained the skills of retaining the workforce.
