Kolkata: India and China will increasingly collaborate in the education sector and to take advantage of the situation, it is essential for the young in the country to learn Chinese, a top official of the neighbouring country said here today.
There will be enhanced cooperation between the two countries in the areas of trade, culture, history, science, and educational research, Chinese consul-general Mao Siwei said.
"And to take advantage of the situation, it is essential for the young to learn Chinese," he told PTI at the International Kolkata Bookfair here.
Mao, who inaugurated the School of Chinese Language pavilion that showcases works and artefacts from the Asian economic giant, said the Kolkata-based school has started a useful partnership with the largest medical university in Yunnan, Kumming Medical University.
He also referred to the joint certification programme in Chinese signed between the School and Calcutta University. This is a non-profit endeavour working towards fostering ties between the people of India and China.
MD Charisma Shroff, administrator of the school, said it was offering Mandarin courses in several formats varying from a couple of months to years.
