Pursuing a dream

Science has always been the stream most students are encouraged to take as it presents many more career options. And of the three streams, humanities students have been considered the weaker of their science or commerce brethren mainly because of a misconception that the humanities is for the less brainy. This, of course, is a complete myth. Humanities is not a high scoring option as the answers could be very subjective whereas in science most subjects have the potential to garner a hundred per cent marks. What is more, career options for students from the humanities stream are available only in their field of study.

However, all this could well be a thing of the past as the HRD Ministry is looking at launching a national testing scheme, allowing students to sit in national-level exams by providing them a second opportunity to pursue education of their area of interest. So a student wanting to become a journalist up till Class XII could change his or her priority and become a doctor or an engineer.

The way it would work is simple. If a student had not done commerce in Class XII but wanted to be a doctor, all he or she has to do is to sit for the medical entrances because he/she would be eligible to do so. And if the student got through, then he could potentially become a doctor.

But there are mixed feelings about the move. Some academicians feel that the move would open up many options for students whereas others feel that there is not necessity to conduct so many tests.
The scheme is yet at the germination stage so it is hard to say whether it would go through and what percentage of students would actually be able to pass the entrances to subjects they were unfamiliar with. On the face of it the options presented are indeed a student’s dream but would the student be really able to pursue the dream? One wonders.
