IPR course for women

The training is aimed at having a pool of resources trained in scientific and technical aspects of intellectual property rights.

Many women qualified in science and technology did not pursue the field further due to various reasons. In an attempt to bring back such qualified women to the field of science and technology, the Department of Science and Technology had created a scholarship programme for training in Intellectual Property Rights, said R. Saha from the Department. Dr. Saha is the director and adviser of the Patent Facilitating Centre, Technology Information and Forecasting Assessment Council in the Department.

This scholarship scheme for women candidates is being offered by the Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with Centre for Cooperation in Science and Technology among Developing Societies. With Intellectual Property Rights gaining importance, professionals who understood both the legal as well as scientific aspects of research products were required, said Ganga Radhakrishnan, honorary director, CCSTDS, Chennai.

A stipend of Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000 per month would be provided to postgraduates and doctorates respectively. Candidates had to clear an All -India Entrance Test and an interview to be selected. Selected candidates would be provided one-month orientation programme, which would be held in Delhi, and an on-the-job training for 11 months, she said.

The training is aimed at having a pool of resources trained in scientific and technical aspects of intellectual property rights, said Dr. Saha. After this training, the women could work with legal organisations or could start a consulting firm on their own. “They need not attend an office nine-to-five,” said Dr. Saha.

The programme aims to train talented and skilled women who have studied science, engineering and medicines in patent searches and other aspects of intellectual property rights enabling them to seek specialised employment or be self-employed. Some of the skills imparted include preparing specialised reports such as technology scan based on patent information, and those undergoing the training can also conduct workshops on IPR. Women candidates with M.Sc./Ph.D in physical sciences, chemical sciences, life sciences or B.Tech., or B.E/M.Tech. or MBBS/MS/MD/MVsc./M.Pharm. with a good academic record are eligible to apply.
