With most players in the IT sector affected by economic recession, many students are turning to the varied management streams that offer better salaries and growth opportunities. The focus of firms affected by the cash crunch is to reorganise their business and get optimal returns from the existing resources. Thus, management graduates can now choose from a variety of job options in different spheres.

A two-day MBA Education Fair that held in Kochi offered young men and women numerous options to choose from among a medley of management courses offered by prominent and upcoming institutions in India and abroad.

The basics

The event was organised by ISE Event Management Pvt. Ltd., with The Hindu EducationPlus as the media partner. Apart from guiding students on different aspects of upcoming streams in hospitality, health care, aviation, human resources and retail management, the 51 participating institutions guided youth on how to go about processing papers for studying management overseas, handling unscrupulous agents who cheat aspiring graduates, and a lot more.

A few institutions that offer two-year MBA courses too participated in the fair. Representatives of four foreign institutions — University of Coventry in the U.K., University of Woollongong in Dubai, London School of Commerce and the James Cook University in Singapore — participated.

The Madras School of Social Work offered a unique ‘twinning programme' under which graduates in any discipline can pursue management studies for a year each, in India and in the Missouri State University, U.S.

Advantages

“The advantages are many such as reduction in the cost of study and easier visa availability to the U.S. The students can also choose two majors to study,” said V. Venkataraman, the school's coordinator. The institution also guides candidates on visa procedures and imparts training to appear for GMAT and TOEFL.

The annual intake is limited to around 40 seats and students also get graduate assistanceship that empowers them financially.

The Amity Global Business School was yet another participant at the education fair. The visiting faculty at the Kochi campus includes experts from IIMs and XLRI.

“Each semester, students are provided first-hand exposure to related sectors. They can pursue a semester in our campus at Singapore or the U.K.,” said Madhu D. Menon, marketing and placement manager of the business school.

A representative of Edex International said that in case of suspicion or doubt about any overseas educational agent's credibility, students must verify with the university concerned details such as fees and related expenses that agents demand from them. Most details are available in their website.
