Training programme held

The Department of Bioinformatics of Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science organised a hands-on training programme in COPASI and Cell Designer systems' biology tools in association with NeoGen BioSolutions, Chennai. The focus of the workshop was to discover and exploit the properties of different known chemicals in finding out the drug targets.

The cadets of the 2 (TN) Air Sqn NCC took part in a cycle rally that was organised as part of the NCC Day celebrations. The rally was flagged off at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Cadets cycled from the university to the Maruthamalai Leprosy Home.

A conference on business research was held at PSG Institute of Management. More than 50 delegates from various States attended the conference. V. Kovaichelvan, Vice-President, HR, TVS Motor Company India Limited, Bangalore, inaugurated the conference and spoke on the opportunities that India had in the competitive business environment. He outlined the challenges lying ahead for Indian business. R. Nandagopal, Director of the institute stressed the importance of accreditation for B-schools and the research efforts of Indian B-schools.

An English Literary Club as inaugurated at the United Institute of Technology. D. Edwin Joseph Raj, Head of Department, English, Government College of Technology, inaugurated the club and urged Tamil medium students to actively use English in day-to-day life and not only in the classrooms. He said that the language helped the students get better placements.

The NSS units of Bharathiar University observed the communal harmony and fund raising week. They also observed the Flag Day. Vice-Chancellor C. Swaminathan inaugurated the national fund raising campaign by donating cash and also by distributing the flags. NSS volunteers of the affiliated colleges of the university also took part in the fund raising campaign.

The NSS units of the Avinashilingam University for Women arranged for a special talk on health awareness. More than 200 volunteers attended the programme. Dr. Mahadevan, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, addressed the students. He spoke on the general health habits youth should develop for a healthy living. He touched upon the habits like brushing, bathing, and problems like dandruff and pimples. The talk was followed by a skin and hair screening camp where the volunteers underwent screening and were given counselling regarding the problems.

The Sankara Institute of Management Science organised an industrial visit to Systems Textiles (P) Limited, Tirupur. The students visited the factory and also the knitting, spinning, cutting and packing divisions. They also interacted with experts at the factory to know about the functioning of the various divisions. A visit to the dyeing unit was also part of the visit.

The Faculty of Management of the Erode Builder Educational Trust's Group of Institutions, Kangeyam, launched The Hindu Business Line Club lecture series. K. Ramakrishnan, Country Head – Marketing, Lenovo India, Bangalore, inaugurated the club and spoke to the students on what they should expect from management education. A.S. Vasudevan, Deputy General Manager, Karur Vysya Bank, Coimbatore, was the special guest.

The Eco Club and NSS units of PSG College of Nursing organised a skill-oriented programme on the theme “Creativity from Waste” at the Panchayat Elementary School, Nagarajapuram and the PSG Middle School, Vedapatti. This was to commemorate the Children's Day and to create awareness among children related to global warming, its impact on climate and health. There was a demonstration by nursing students on causes, prevention and magnitude of global warming.

The Nutrition and Dietetics Department of Dr. NGP Arts and Science College organised a national seminar on “Contemporary Technicalities in Food Processing”. Resource persons exhorted the students to explore and develop innovative food products by applying food processing techniques. The seminar served as a platform for delegates to deliberate on issues related to food processing and present innovative solutions.

SVS College of Engineering organised a parents' meet and students' award function. T. Kannadasan, Vice-Chancellor (officiate), Anna University, Coimbatore, spoke on the role of technical institutions in shaping young minds in the relevant academic environment. The need of the hour was entrepreneurship development and students needed to be motivated to become job-providers. Cash prizes and certificates were awarded to meritorious students.

Sree Narayana Guru Institute of Management Studies organised a workshop on “Financial Markets” and “Living 500 years in 50 years”. Amit K. Arora, National Head, Alternative Channels, Reliance Money, and other representatives from the organisation handled sessions on equity, capital markets and stressed on opportunities available in the financial industry for management graduates.

The NCC Girls' wing of SNMV College of Arts and Science organised a tree planting campaign at the college premises. Nearly 100 neem saplings were planted by the students. The saplings were donated by Siruthuli. The campaign was organised to inculcate a sense of compassion towards the environment and awareness about pollution among the cadets.

A science and humanities' association was inaugurated at the Karpagam Institute of Technology by Anandavalli Mahadevan, Vice-Chancellor, Karpagam University. Inaugurating the association, she spoke about climate change, the Nobel prize and the necessity for developing communication skills.

The Department of Management of Coimbatore Institute of Engineering and Information Technology inaugurated its association “Valens ‘09”. K.A. Chinnaraju, Director of the institute, inaugurated the association and addressed the students. The vision-mission statement, quality policy and logo of the association were released on the occasion.

The ISTE Chapter of RVS College of Engineering and Technology conducted a programme on “Career Guidance – Role of Staff”. Colonel (Retd.) Jeyaraj spoke on IELTS, TOEFL and the university entry scheme for Air Force, Navy and Army. There was also a talk on GATE and competitive examinations for engineers. There was also a technical session for the engineering students.

Tamil Nadu College of Engineering and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) entered into a memorandum of understanding to conduct the IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence and Computing Research. The conference offered an opportunity for developing a wide range of professional relationships, presentations, exhibits and interaction with leaders and innovators in the field. The MoU was signed by Anusha R. Mahesh, Chief Executive of the college, and Krishnan Nallaperumal, Chair, IEEE, Podhigai sub-section and IEEE Sipcicom.

The EASA College of Engineering and Technology conducted a seminar on “Global Trends in Engineering Design”. B. Arvind Kumar, Manager, CAD Solutions, Coimbatore, inaugurated the seminar and spoke on the topic. He explained the stages of designing and modern methods involved in bringing out final products such as fans, washing machines, aeroplanes, automobiles, etc.
