Chennai: The Madras University will make a foreign language mandatory for post-graduate courses in Management and Computer Science. During the visit of former French Minister and now the Roving French Ambassador for Culture in Asia, Jacques Valade, to the university on Monday, vice-chancellor G Thiruvasagam said the university would make a foreign language mandatory from the coming academic year.
Initially we will start with French. The possibilities are more and if there is a request from the academia we can organise for other languages also, he said.
He said French was introduced into the curriculum of the university as early as the 1920s. Today the university has a full-fledged department of French offering Masters and Ph Ds,he said.
Interacting with the students, Jacques Valade said ties between France and India were extremely close.
On how he sees the Franco- Indian ties in the next 10 years, he said, There is no particular reason why this close and warm ties should not continue in the future. He also said that French President Nicolas Sarkozy would soon make a visit to India.
On studying in France, he said students were always welcome to his country.
Though there is no requirement to study French to study in France, it will serve as an added advantage, he said.
On migration and integration into France, he replied,as long as they respect French laws, French culture, they are not going to be rejected.
