Kolkata: Over 19 animation students from Kolkata met animation experts from international and Indian studios in the country’s biggest animation meet, the National Students Meet (NSM) in Mumbai on January 18.
NSM will bring together animation experts and Indian students and initiate a knowledge sharing process.
Organised by the pioneer of 3D animation education in India, Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics (MAAC), the NSM 2010 in its 7th edition, will see studios like Dreamworks, Rhythm & Hues, Prime Focus, Eye Qube and Prana showcase their animation works for popular movies like ‘Aladin’, ‘Blue’ and ‘Monster v/s Alien’, among others.
Over 19 students come from Girish Park, Kakurgachi and other MAAC centres in Kolkata. This was the largest ever participation by Kolkata students in the NSM, which is into its seventh edition this year.
The students underwent specialized workshops on various aspects of 3D Animation and Visual Effects, panel discussions, team building trainings, live contests, and studio visits as part of the week-long edutainment activities from January 18.
Says Gaurav Markan, vice-president, industry relations, MAAC, "The response to the NSM has been overwhelming over the years, which in turn is a definitive indication of the gaining popularity of animation in India. Through the NSM, we expose animation students to international works, technologies and standards and equip them for the most advanced career skills. An important aspect is that they are abreast of the changing requirements of the industry and learn how to shape themselves to be industry leaders. The Kolkata market has seen a sudden surge in demand for animation career.”
NSM would see the first ever visit of Dreamworks’ Shelley Page to India in which she is expected to share her experiences through a lecture titled ‘Design for Animation’.
The National Students Meet is a national initiative by MAAC for the students of 3D Animation & VFX that takes them for a week-long journey that exposes them to high-end seminars, workshops and case studies of Indian & International projects. Case studies include some famous animation work done for feature films, games, and gaming technology.
