CHEMbridge 2010

Kolkata: The chemical engineering department of Jadavpur University celebrates its annual reunion, CHEMBridge, that offers a platform of interaction between its alumni and its present students, teachers and staff members.

The curtain raiser of CHEMBridge 2010, the annual reunion of this year, was held on January 11 and this was inaugurated by Dr V K Saraswat, scientific aviser to Raksha Mantri and secretary to government of India, department of defence research & development.
 
A national school on “Diverse Walks of Chemical Engineering” was held on January 16 including a poster competition involving participants from national institutes of repute.

Speakers have been invited from institutes like the IITs, IISc, TIFR. The third segment of the students’ career enrichment programme will witness a national workshop on January 29, where eminent speakers from the industry as well as research establishments of the country will interact directly with the aspiring engineers.

All these events will culminate into the reunion programme which will be held during February 20-21, 2010.

During these two days, three workshops, namely, “Environmental Impact of Chemical, Petrochemical and Allied Industries in India”, “Current Trends in Chemical, Petrochemical and Allied Industries in India” and “Role of Chemical Engineers in Community Development” will be held in parallel sessions.

In the first two sessions, senior executives of companies like IOCL, ONGC, BPCL, MRPL, CALS refinery, HPL, ABB, BOC, PCRA, HUL, MN Dastur, Outotech, Reliance Polymer will participate and discuss the present problems of these sectors and also suggest the future course of actions to be taken in order to have a benign environment.

Being the pioneer of chemical engineering education in the country, the department feels the necessity to bridge the gap between the needs of the industry and the education provided to the budding engineers which has in it the perspectives of globalisation and modern developments like biotechnology, alternative energy (such as fuel cells) and nano-technology.

Also, environmental concerns have become the central issue. In this scenario, the organising committee of the Reunion - CHEMBridge 2010 has planned to host a series of technical activities.
 
Some 750 participants including budding engineers, faculty members, consultants, professionals and policy makers from various parts of the country will attend the workshops. A further 1000 top-notch chemical engineers representing academia, industries and public policy bodies will attend this mega event.

During the activities to be held on February 20-21, 2010, these professionals on a common platform will exchange their ideas in diffusing the fruits of scientific developments clubbed with appropriate technological inputs in order to have a benign environment. This will unfold a greater horizon in order to have wide varieties of Chemical Industries in and around West Bengal.

This endeavor will surely change the industrial scenario of West Bengal and provide a leadership role in future days to attract both national and international companies to mutually act and blossom in this great land of West Bengal.
