Kolkata: A three-day mini fair to invite students to study in UK in 2010 was recently held in the University of Sussex’s Kolkata branch. Some of the best universities of UK – Sussex, Bristol, Edinburgh, Manchester, Sheffield, Leicester, and Birmingham among many others were promoted at the event.
The Indian representatives of some of these universities were present over the period of three days to counsel students and parents.
Kausik Mitra, education advisor of University of Sussex in India, talked at length about the courses being offered at the graduate, post graduate and research levels.
Engineering subjects, biosciences, management studies and subjects of social sciences are all available.
But the motive of the fair was also to highlight the importance of studying global issues such as climate change, international migration, conflict and violence, international security, and global cultures and religions.
”Most emphasised course was the climate change course at the post graduation level in the wake of the Copenhagen Summit, which is a brainchild of Sussex. It was encouraging to see students and their parents being receptive about such new and unconventional courses,” he said.
Mitra quite frankly agreed that bright Indian students, until a few years back opted mainly for engineering or science subjects. But now many are opening up to the prospect of studying social sciences. He said that subjects like Gender Development and Social and Rural Development, to a certain extent, are custom made for students of the Indian sub-continent. It is a nice thing to complete studies in UK and come back to India, as many students have, and work here.
The fair was comprehensive in the sense that apart from the basic counselling to choose the subjects according to one’s aptitude, admission procedures and visa documentation were also exhaustively discussed. The students have been ensured they would get a two-year work visa after successful completion of their course.
