Carving out a career in medical profession

Jaiben George is all smiles following his performance in the entrance exam to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, in 2009.

This 17-year old son of V.V. Georgekutty, retired Deputy Commissioner of Sales Tax and Prof. Nirmala George of Chemistry Department at Assumption College, Changanacherry, is the first Keralite to top in the medical entrance examinations conducted by AIIMS.

“Moral support from the dear and near ones, systematic learning process at Placid Vidya Vihar attached to Christu Jyoti Group of Institutions at Chethippuzha near Changnacherry and above all, God's grace was the secret of my success, I believe,” says Jaiben who had left a milestone in the history of medical entrance examinations at both national and State level in 2009. Joining All-India Institute of Medical Sciences for MBBS was a dream come true to Jaiben who ultimately landed there, scoring 72.5 per cent in the exclusive entrance examinations held in 2009. Third rank in All-India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) was the first honour that reached the door steps of Varanethu house of the Georges in Changanacherry in July last.

Topper

In the next one week, Jaiben became the topper in the Kerala Medical Entrance Examinations too, besides bagging first rank in the national-level entrance test conducted by AIIMS.

Now, a first year MBBS student at AIIMS, Delhi, Jaiben is a contented soul. Sharing thoughts with The Hindu-EducationPlus during his recent Kerala visit, Jaiben said he preferred medical profession as it involves service to humanity. He was planning to do his PG in neurology as he wanted to become a neurosurgeon.

Disciplined learning

Jaiben says he owes the victory largely to the well-disciplined learning programme at the Placid Vidya Vihar. Fr James Mullasserry, his mentor and school principal, said strong faith in God, handling things in a tension-free, humble manner and of course, hard work have been the qualities predominant in Jaiben's personality. Jaiben says immense support from his parents and sister, Elyne George, who is a software engineer with Infosys, moral strength and inspiration he received from Fr James Mullasserry and above all, God's grace, was the secret of his success. He had his coaching for the medical entrance test at the satellite coaching centre of the Pala-based Brillant Study Centre at Placid Vidya Vihar.

“Completing the lessons taught in the class the same day itself was a practice I could follow right from my sixth class at Placid. Fr Mullasserry as well as my teachers there were the driving spirit for the success,” he adds. Jaiben used to study up to seven hours a day, leaving not less than an hour for medical entrance lessons. He had scored 96.2 per cent for the CBSE Class XII examinations. It is noteworthy that he was placed 38 {+t} {+h} in the Kerala Engineering Entrance Examinations too. Cricket is his favourite game and hobby.

“No doubt, AIIMS is the best option an MBBS aspirant has got in India. Here, we have got an excellent faculty, round the clock library facility and representation of the students from different parts of the country and abroad, creating a perfect ambience for medical studies,” Jaiben said.

As many as 16 students from Kerala have been admitted to MBBS at AIIMS in 2009 on the basis of their performance in the entrance test which, he says, is the largest number representing any State. Jaiben is also a scholarship holder in National Talent Search Examination.
