Pune University recognises CIE students

Updated on: Thursday, April 16, 2009

Pune: University of Pune grants recognition to University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) students. The University of Pune has announced that students holding Cambridge International A Level qualifications from CIE are equivalent to class 12 of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (Government of Maharashtra).

The decision will smooth the path for Cambridge students who want to progress to Pune University, and is welcomed by CIE. Ian Chambers, CIE’s Regional Manager for South Asia, said: “CIE holds regular meetings with educational institutions in India to ensure that progression pathways are opened for Cambridge students. It’s good to see more and more universities in India accepting Cambridge qualifications. This decision by Pune University will greatly benefit students and make it easier for them to progress.”

There are currently over ten schools offering Cambridge programmes in and around Pune, including Symbiosis International School, V S Gurukul, RIMS Junior College and Cathedral Vidya International School in Lonavla.

Last year, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education announced that students holding Cambridge IGCSE examinations, the most popular international curriculum for 14-16 year olds in India, are eligible for admission to the first year of Junior College (Std XI).

As well as raising awareness among higher education institutions in India, CIE also ensures that students and parents fully understand the Cambridge approach. On 15 April, Ian Chambers will hold a seminar for parents at Bishops School in Pune to give them an overview of the Cambridge International Curriculum. Bishops School is introducing Cambridge programmes this year.

Chambers added, “Bishops School promises to be an excellent partner for Cambridge and I am pleased to support their activities with an orientation for parents. The session will give parents an opportunity to ask questions about Cambridge qualifications, and I will talk through the various modules and the student-centred approach to learning. Cambridge qualifications are recognised around the world, and give students an excellent preparation for university success.”
