New Delhi: Geet oberoi, Founder-President , Orkids Multidisciplinary Clinic won the Guruvar Award for Outstanding Indian Teacher of children with special needs on January 2, 2009.
The Guruvar Awards have been conceived by the Varkey Gems Foundation to honour the contributions of the teacher fraternity. The nominations began in September 2009 and out of one lakh nominations, and 48 finalists 16 shone as winners. The nation was divided into four zones and Oberoi won the award in the category from the North Zone.
Oberoi says that by instituting a category for special learning needs, these awards at one level have made a landmark beginning to spread awareness about the specific prerequisites that equip one to embark upon a career as a teacher for children with special learning needs. “Also, incidentally, this is the first time in the history of Indian education that an award has been instituted to recognise the contribution of teachers in the domain of inclusive education”, she informs. Founder of the Delhi Learning Disabilities Association (DLDA), Oberoi is of the opinion that India is at the threshold of a new era as far as inclusive education is concerned. This is a step towards a brighter future for all children.
