IIT Bombay recently celebrated Alumni Day with several hundred ex-students gathering on campus. Successful IITians flocked together, reminiscing and catching up. Special focus was on the students of the Class of '84 who were present in full force.
As is the tradition at IIT-B, every batch takes on a Legacy Project in its silver jubilee year of graduation. The aim of the project is to leave behind a lasting memory of the batch. Explains Milind Gokhale, chairman of the IIT Bombay Alumni Association, Alumni Day is rendered special by the Legacy Projects announcement. By this, we give back to the institution that has done so much for us.
The Legacy Project team, in conjunction with the core planning team for the reunion, selected the theme ‘Past /Present / Future for the initiative. A project was launched for every time frame:
Retired faculty wellness fund
For many reasons, the faculty members that retired before 2003 do not have any health coverage provided by the IIT or the Government. With their advanced age, most of them would also be ineligible to buy private insurance. Hence, a wellness fund is imperative. This fund will set up a corpus to supplement medical coverage for the faculty retired prior to 2003.
Green mission
This green initiative is for the benefit of the current residents of the campus. The project is to cultivate the rich biodiversity on campus. The project will be developed with guidance from the World Wildlife Fund.
Sign-on bonuses
This initiative was originally started by the 1982 batch, and supplemented by the 1983 batch. This will add funds to the existing corpus that has been set up to fund sign-on bonuses for the incoming faculty. As IIT-B tries to compete for the best talent, sign-on bonuses will become an important component of faculty compensation. This will allow the institution to compete with private sector.
Commenting on the three projects, Arvind Sanger, alumnus from the Class of '84 says, We all have gained tremendously from the quality of education IIT imparted to us. A large part of our success can be traced back to the opportunities, the IIT education created for us. Through these projects we wish to give something back to our alma mater and leave behind a remembrance of our silver jubilee reunion.
