Concern over neglect of research in country

Tamil Nadu Agricultutral University conducted Transpire'09, a National Symposium on Agricultural Information Technology. Vice-Chancellor (Officiate) Anna University, T. Kannadasan and P. Murugesa Boopathy, Vice Chancellor, TNAU were present. Mr. Kannadasan spoke about neglect of research in our country. Mr. Boopathy said that the production of food grain in our country doubled from that of in 1947. India nearly produces 230 million tonnes a year. TNAU is making efforts to enable knowledge empowerment of farmers with the help of information technology. He said in the coming years new ideas will be enabled for the exploitation of “Agricultural Information Technology”.

The Department of Commerce of Sri Krishna College of Arts and Science conducted a deliberation on Business Blogs. V. Yuga Moorthy, Managing Director, Wonder Wings Web Marketing, inaugurated the workshop and spoke on marketing blogs. He said marketing blogs were used for interaction and were major tools for public relations. Students made presentations related to the theme.

Kumaraguru College of Technology inked a memorandum of understanding with Cameron Manufacturing (India) Private Limited. B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Co-Chairman of the college and John D. Watson, representative, Global Talent Acquisition, Cameron, signed the MoU that would entail sharing of knowledge resources between both the parties. It would also include organising lectures, providing projects for students and faculty development programmes.

The final year MBA students of Dr. S.N.S. Rajalakshmi College of Arts and Science visited the Neyam Physically Handicapped School and donated food, clothes and cement bags for construction of the school.

The Business Management Department of Rathinam College of Arts and Science inaugurated an association “Marc”. A. Ponnusamy, professor, Social Work, G.R. Damodaran College of Science, inaugurated the association and urged students to become entrepreneurs. He exhorted the students to invite experts in the field of entrepreneurship to guide them in their endeavours.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Coimbatore Institute of Engineering and Information Technology organised a technical symposium “Presto”. P. Palanisamy, professor, Department of CSE, Easwari Engineering College, Chennai, was the chief guest. He spoke to the students on “Successful Software Engineering”.

The School of Engineering, Karunya University, inked a memorandum of understanding with the Builders' Association of India, Coimbatore Centre. Paul P. Appasamy, Vice-Chancellor of the university and D.R. Sekar, Chairman of the association signed the MoU that would entail developing partnerships for developing a student-worker training and development programme to meet the growing talent gap in the construction industry. Also, training programmes for different target groups, organising of seminars, symposia, etc., would be conducted under the aegis of the MoU.

Sankara College of Science and Commerce organised a campus recruitment drive. Net Magnus Solutions India (Private) Limited conducted the drive for its personnel requirement. Final year MCA students of the college and more than 250 students from 20 other colleges attended the drive. Nearly 150 students were shortlisted for the final selection to be held in Chennai.

Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College hosted a five-day faculty development programme “Mission”. It was conducted by Wipro Limited. Nearly 30 faculty members from the college, Karpagam College of Engineering and Hindusthan College of Engineering attended the programme.

It involved capacity building and ways for continuous professional development of teachers in engineering education. Various impact teaching skills in various disciplines were taught.

A seminar on “Innovating Total Quality Management Strategies for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises” was held at Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science. W. Raj Mohan, Chief Mentor, Man-to-Succeed, inaugurated the seminar and spoke on the TQM principles. He said investment was the most important for implementing TQM practices. But, people who could contribute and get a part of the total returns were trying to implement these techniques even in small and medium scale enterprises, he added.

The Department of Visual Communication organised a seminar on “Trends in Education”. Gerben Cath, Director, South Seas Film and Television School, Auckland, New Zealand, was the chief guest of the programme.

The seminar covered topics like film studies, animation, media industry training and career and also tips on how to make a career in the media industry. Mr. Cath spoke on the new technology developments and advanced creative skills training available in New Zealand.

Ranganthan Engineering College and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited entered into a memorandum of understanding for sharing of knowledge resources between both the parties. Francis Jacob, Deputy General Manager, BSNL, said that it was growing at a fast pace to reach out to every nook and corner of the country. He assured a growth of 1.5 crore people every year and in another three years BSNL would reach out to the extent of 85 per cent of the country.

The Department of Social Work of Bharathiar University organised a vehicle campaign at the university premises to create awareness among the general public on the use of non-recyclable plastics and the detrimental effects of the same to mankind and the environment. C. Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor of the university, was the chief guest. He flagged off the vehicle that passed through Coimbatore city and the adjoining panchayats.

A rally on cleanliness for a healthy nation was conducted by the National Cadet Corps of the Avinashilingam University for Women. More than 150 cadets participated in the rally. Vice-Chancellor Saroja Prabhakaran flagged off the rally which went around the streets of the university.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) library organised a book exhibition. The function was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor Dr.P. Murugesa Boopathy. Around 25,000 books were on display from more than 10 leading publishers from all over the country. The collection included books on Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Bio-energy, Entomology, Food Science, Genetics, Horticulture, Nanotechnology, Plant Science, Soil Science, Agribusiness etc. Books on competitive exams were also exhibited. 20 per cent discount was given on all books.

Sankara Institute of Management Science conducted a seminar on “Practical Problems in Management”. The first session was handled by the Proprietor, Vijay Associates, Coimbatore, A .Vijay Krishnan. He explained about the concept of event management and its importance. The challenges and opportunities in event management were discussed. He also clarified the doubts of the students at the end of the session. The second session was handled by members of Vijay Associates. They shared their experiences of promoting a multinational company.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and IBM jointly conducted AMRITA-IBM International Conference on Cloud Computing, Smart Grid and Green IT at the convention centre in the Coimbatore campus. Cloud Computing promises to define the future of computing. The major IT companies all over the world such as IBM, Microsoft, HP, and Google are deploying clouds to share services and resources among partners and customers.
