IGNOU's first City Centre in Delhi

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has set up a new City Centre at the heart of the national capital to facilitate easy access to information about the University and its various academic programmes.

Established at the YMCA Tourist Hostel in Connaught Place here, the Centre is first-of-its-kind in the country and will meet the information needs of aspiring learners and of the public, Centre's Regional Director K D Prasad told UNI.

He noted students were finding it very difficult to reach the University's headquarters at Maidan Garhi due to problems like traffic congestion and limited availability of public transport.

Dr Prasad informed that however, the work to establish the Centre had started last year in December, it has become fully functional now with all kinds of facilities available.

''All the facilities like distribution, deposition and collection of documents like registration forms, exam applications and others would be provided at the Centre,'' he said.

The Centre is set up in 1,400 sq feet area in the YMCA premises. About seven people have been recruited by the University to run it. Along with providing support services to prospective learners, guardians and general public, including the press personnel, a Student Guidance Cell has also been set up at the Centre.

Talking about the University's future plans to improve the Centre further, Dr Prasad said efforts were being taken to organise counseling sessions and to set up help desks at places frequented by the public.

''The Centre proposes to set up tele-conferencing facilities, students' charter and face-to-face interaction between students and teachers through special connectivity for the benefit of the same,'' Dr Prasad said.
