Mumbai: Sixteen teachers, ten of them belonging to smaller cities, across the country were bestowed with "Guruvar awards" for their contribution in the field of teaching.
The search for best teachers by Varkey Gems Foundation, an education trust in North India, began in September this year and 16 teachers, of which ten are women, were selected for the award, Sunny Varkey of the foundation said today.
These 16 teachers were selected out of 48 shortlisted from one lakh entries received from across the country, he said. The awardees were given Rs 10 lakh each and a certificate for their outstanding achievement in teaching school children.
Remaining 32 teachers were given Rs 1.25 lakh each and a certificate by the foundation for their achievements, he said. The Awards were initiated by the Varkey Gems Foundation to recognise the critical role teachers play in our community, Varkey said.
"A healthy and sound education system is one of the pillars for any developing nation. There is no education without teachers and without enough teachers we cannot improve the education our children receive. This is just a small recognition to improve the shortage of strong and passionate teachers that threatens our education system," he said in a release.
