Karnataka to clear Rs. 71-crore arrears to educational institutions next year

Updated on: Friday, April 10, 2009

Karnataka Social Welfare Minister D. Sudhakar on Friday, said that the State government was yet to reimburse Rs. 71 crore to educational institutions towards the fees to be paid by the students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and it would clear the arrears in the next financial year.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Sudhakar said that the government had taken a decision to pay up the entire arrears.

He said that 49 new Morarji Desai Residential schools had been opened this year.

The number of seats in the hostels all over the State had been raised considerably.

Autonomous Institution

He said that an autonomous institution for running the Morarji Desai schools, numbering around 380, would be created shortly, by taking them out of the zilla panchayats.

The intake in these schools had also increased, depending upon the available accommodation. The new institution would also be entrusted with the job of selecting students, he said.

Training

Mr. Sudhakar said that a training Program for 15,000 cooks, wardens and other staff members, working at the hostels, has been organised at Mysore on October 21.

The Minister said that the inquiry into the allegations of irregularities against the then Social Welfare Commissioner, K. Shivaram, by the Karnataka Lokayukta, was complete.

The charges against the senior IAS officer had been framed, he said, and further inquiry under the CCA Rules was continuing.

He said that the Kolar District Social Welfare Officer, Pandurangappa, had been found to have misappropriated Rs. 1.5 crore of government funds; till now Rs. 1.2 crore had been recovered from him.

The remaining amount would also be recovered, the Minister added. Mr. Sudhakar said that he would study whether the reservation given to Muslims by the State government under two categories (Karnataka Backward Classes Commission list) — one under the castes and another under Muslims — was unconstitutional.

He said the A.J. Sadashiva Commission was looking into the issue of internal reservation to the left and right wings among the Scheduled Castes.
