Orientation programme on sign language

Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University-Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education conducted an orientation programme on Indian Sign Language (ISL) for undergraduate and post-graduate nursing students of PSG College of Nursing. Students were oriented about the usage of sign language, its importance in communication aspects, ways and means of communicating with the hearing-impaired and the role of sign language by interpreter in communication by Poongothai, the sign language interpreter.

The association of the management department of the Coimbatore Institute of Management and Technology “Horizon” was inaugurated recently. P. Kanagasabapathy, Director, Tamil Nadu Institute of Urban Studies, was the chief guest. In his speech, he focused on the global economic crisis and its impact on India. He said that a majority of Indian companies, whether small, medium, or large scale, never depended on the Government for the capital because they had enormous social capital.

The School of Social Work of Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science, Kovai Medical Center and Hospital and Dina Malar jointly conducted a programme on “Awareness on Mental Health” to commemorate the World Mental Day. Dr. Srinivasan, Psychiatrist, KMCH, led the programme. He explained what mental health meant and touched upon topics like depression and anxiety. He also distributed prizes for winners in the competitions that were held on mental health.

Students of the Department of Social Work of Bharathiar University organised a workshop on “Development of Skill and Self-Confidence” at the Marudamalai Higher Secondary School, Vadavalli. Poet Kavidasan inaugurated the workshop and spoke on overcoming fear and facing life confidently. More than 1,000 students of the school attended the workshop.

Gandhi Jayanthi was observed by the students and staff of Avinashilingam University for Women. P. Kuppusamy, lawyer, was the chief guest of the day. He spoke on values like selfless love, non-violence, humanity, prayerful service, etc. The national integration pledge was administered to the students by the Chancellor T.K. Shanmuganandam. Prizes were distributed to winners of various competitions held in connection with Gandhi Jayanthi.

The NSS units of Sri Krishna Arts and Science College conducted an awareness programme on breast cancer in Sugunapuram and Myilkal. A rally was organised and NSS volunteers visited the houses in the areas and gave counselling to the public about breast cancer. They also gave out pamphlets and other literature about the disease.

A national convention on automation was conducted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Jacques Foulquier, Director and Vice-President, Renault Nissan Technology and Business Centre, India, inaugurated the convention and spoke on the global automotive scenario. Various events were held as part of the convention. A club presentation where the students displayed their working mechanical models was also held. P.P.R. Rao, Executive Director, UCAL Fuel System Limited, was the chief guest for the valediction.

A winter school on ‘Application of Molecular Tools for Crop Improvement” was inaugurated at Sugarcane Breeding Institute by V. Udhaysuriyan, Head, Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. It aimed to provide hands-on training in advanced techniques in plant molecular biology and biotechnology to scientists working in various research institutes under ICAR and State Agricultural Universities and to contribute towards making their scientific research more dynamic and responsive to the need of the hour. The Department of Computer Applications of VLB Janakiammal College of Engineering and Technology organised “Catena ‘09”, a technical symposium. It aimed at serving as a forum to offer opportunities for participants to tap their innate potential and share their expertise in various areas related to their co-curricular activities. Students from over 200 colleges participated in the symposium that was inaugurated by K. Ganesan, Vice-President, Human Resource, and Global Head, Tata Consultancy Services Limited, Chennai.

The Department of Catering Science and Hotel Management of PSG College of Arts and Science organised Diwali celebrations in the college. The highlight of the celebration was the kolam the students made with vegetables. Later they arranged ‘mann vilakku' around the kolam. This was followed by a display of fire works. Variety entertainment like dance and song sequences formed part of the celebrations. Students had also prepared a lavish display of festival delicacies to cater to the taste buds.

Info Institute of Engineering inaugurated the Red Ribbon Club. N. Vaidheeswaran, Deputy Manager, RRC Club, inaugurated the club and highlighted its main activities. He said the main activities of the club would focus on creating awareness about HIV / AIDS, motivating students to get involved in conducting blood donation camps and the like.

The Department of Catering Science and Hotel Management of Sankara College of Science and Commerce conducted a workshop “Hot and Spicy Skewers” based on Tandoori cuisine. Students of the department were trained in the cuisine by Chef Govind, Rathna Residency. He demonstrated the preparation of dishes like roti, fish tikka, different masalas, chicken tikka, kababs, salads, etc.

The Department of Biotechnology of Karunya University organised a workshop on “Critical Perspectives on Research Methodology in Biomedical Sciences”. It served as a forum for research scholars and post-graduate students to interact and exchange ideas on their on-going work in biomedical sciences. It also brought out new ideas and research knowledge associated with emerging challenges and associated research opportunities on biomedical sciences.

The Mahatma Gandhi Library of Kumaraguru College of Technology organised a four-day book exhibition. B.K. Krishnaraja Vanavarayar, Co-Chairman of the college, inaugurated the exhibition. Book distributors from various parts of the state and also from other parts of the country had displayed books in the branches of science, core engineering, biotechnology, fashion technology, textile management, ethics, culture, etc.

The Commerce Department of Rathinam College of Arts and Science inaugurated the association called “ACE ‘09”. K. Natesan, General Manager, Human Resources Development, Sakthi Finance Limited, inaugurated the association and told the commerce students that they had plenty of opportunities in the present context. He urged them to develop three qualities – attitude, skills and knowledge to become experts in their chosen field.

The Department of Computer Science of Dr. SNS Rajalakshmi College of Arts and Science conducted a programme for XI standard students of VCV Government Higher Secondary School, Vellakinar. A special training programme in handling computers was organised for the students.

The GRD Institute of Management of Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science organised an inter-college meet called “Melange ‘09”. Kovai Chellvan, Senior Vice-President, Human Resource, TVS motors Company Limited, Hosur, inaugurated the meet and said the proportion of youth among the total population was steadily increasing and that this would prove to be an asset. The income of youth was also increasing and this would also improve the standard of living and their spending capacity, he added.
